How to repair a damaged PDF

  1. Drop the damaged PDF. PDFboat checks how many pages it can still find.
  2. Leave "Repair, keep the text" selected. If that fails, PDFboat switches to rescuing the pages as pictures by itself.
  3. Click Repair PDF and download the new file.

Questions

What kind of damage can it fix?

The usual ones: a file cut off in a download, a broken index inside the file, junk at the start or end, a lost list of pages, line endings changed by an old transfer program, and damaged compressed blocks. PDFboat reads the pages directly, fixes what it can and writes a clean new file, then tells you what it did.

What cannot be repaired?

Anything that is really gone. If a download was cut short, the pages in the missing part cannot come back. Some modern files keep their page list in a compressed block near the end; when that end is missing, no program can find the pages and you need to get the file again.

Will I keep my text and links?

When the first repair works, yes: text, links, images and bookmarks stay as they were. If the file is too damaged, PDFboat rescues each page as a picture. It looks the same but the text can no longer be selected or searched.

What if a page is missing?

If part of the file is gone, the pages inside that part cannot come back. PDFboat tells you how many pages it recovered out of how many it found.

Can it open a password-protected PDF?

Yes, if you know the password. Enter it when asked; it never leaves your browser.

Is my damaged file uploaded?

No. Everything happens inside your browser tab.

Can it recover a file that is not a PDF?

No. If the file is not a PDF at all, or has lost everything but fragments, nothing can be rebuilt from it.
