How to convert a Word document to PDF

  1. Drop your .docx file.
  2. Leave the method on Automatic, or choose one yourself. A line under it says what will happen and why.
  3. Click Convert to PDF and download. A short list shows anything that may look different from Word.

Questions

Will it look exactly like in Word?

Close, but not always identical. Word's own fonts (Calibri, Cambria and others) are not available in browsers, so similar fonts are used and lines or pages can break in slightly different places. For a contract or form where every line matters, use Word's own "Save as PDF".

What are the two methods?

"Sharp text" makes real, selectable text with embedded fonts and works for Latin-alphabet documents with one column. "Exact look" lets your browser lay the pages out and saves each page as a picture, with a hidden text layer for Latin words. It handles any language, columns, text boxes, footnotes and diagrams. Automatic chooses for you.

Does it work for Hindi, Arabic, Chinese or Cyrillic?

Yes, through "Exact look", as long as your device has a font for that script. The text is visible but cannot be selected or searched; only Latin letters get the hidden text layer.

Why are my charts, shapes or text boxes missing or wrong?

Neither method can draw Word charts, and drawn shapes (squares, ellipses, groups) are drawn only in part. Plain text boxes usually come through. The result page warns you when your document has any of these. For such files, use Word's own "Save as PDF".

Are page numbers right?

Yes. Page numbers and page counts in headers and footers are counted again for the PDF, so they follow the PDF's own pages. If the PDF breaks pages in a different place than Word did, the page count can differ from Word's.

Can I convert .doc, .odt or .rtf?

Not here. Open an old .doc file in Word and use Save As .docx first. Password-protected Word files must be unlocked in Word first.

Are macros, tracked changes and comments kept?

Macros are ignored. Tracked changes follow what the converter shows, so check the result. Comments in the margin are not shown.

Is my document uploaded?

No. It is opened and converted inside your browser tab. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Can I password-protect the PDF?

Yes. Switch on "Password-protect", choose a password, and the PDF is encrypted with AES-256. It is off by default. If you forget the password it cannot be recovered.
